Custom mouthguards and bite guards are appliances designed to fit your teeth and provide protection or support for specific needs.
Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, can occur during sleep or while you are awake. A bite guard creates a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, helping to cushion the forces involved and protect against direct tooth-to-tooth contact. It does not stop the underlying grinding or clenching itself.
Different appliances are designed for different purposes. At Brick Street Dentures, the options outlined by our team include soft bite guards for lighter grinding, hard-soft bite guards for heavier grinding, sports guards for protection during physical activity, and occlusal splints used for particular jaw-related conditions and bruxism.
Your clinician will discuss your needs and help establish which appliance may be appropriate. Some appliances, including occlusal splints, require a prescription.
We’ll discuss your needs, intended use and any concerns you have. Your clinician will assess your oral environment and determine which type of appliance may be suitable.
Once a suitable treatment plan has been agreed, accurate impressions of your teeth will be taken to help create an appliance designed for your mouth.
Your impressions are used to make your appliance in our on-site dental laboratory, using materials appropriate to the type of guard or splint required.
Your clinician will provide your appliance and explain how and when to use it, along with any relevant aftercare instructions. If you experience discomfort or notice that the appliance feels loose, contact the team for advice.
Our patients don’t just leave with new teeth, they leave with renewed confidence, comfort, and joy.
Every smile tells a story, and every transformation reminds us why we do what we do. From first-time denture wearers to those finally finding the right fit after years of discomfort, these are just a few of the journeys we’ve been proud to be part of.
Bite guards do not prevent the action of grinding or clenching. They act as a protective barrier, helping cushion the forces involved and reduce direct contact between your teeth. Your clinician can discuss your symptoms and whether further advice or assessment may be appropriate.
The options outlined by our team include soft bite guards for lighter grinding or clenching; hard-soft bite guards with a hard outer layer and softer inner layer for heavier grinding; sports guards, also known as gum shields; and occlusal splints for particular bruxism or jaw-related needs. Your clinician can explain the differences and help determine which option is appropriate for you.
A custom-made guard can be designed to accommodate your teeth and orthodontic appliance. It’s important to discuss your braces with your clinician so the guard can be planned appropriately.
According to our current service information, most guards can be arranged directly through Brick Street Dentures. Occlusal splints require a prescription, which may be provided by your own dentist or arranged through a local dentist. Our team can explain the next steps when you enquire.
